60 school children of insurgency-hit Tirap district participate in summer camp

KHONSA, Jun 03: A six-day-long ‘summer camp’ that was flagged off on May 29 at the Assam Rifles Battalion HQ here culminated with a mesmerizing closing ceremony on Saturday evening.

The event was witnessed by the participating students, their parents and many other civil dignitaries including Tirap Deputy Commissioner Hento Kargo, Superintendent of Police (SP) Kardak Riba and District and Sessions Judge, Tirap, Ito Basar.

The evening was full of entertainment and fun where the audience could witness spectacular performances from the Assam Rifles Pipe band and Jazz band and performances by the students.

The ceremony culminated in felicitation of the participants followed by dinner. The summer camp was aimed to provide a wholesome experience to the young students through educational, recreational and adventure activities.

A total of 60 children of Tirap district volunteered to attend the camp wherein various indoor & outdoor activities including trekking, tent pitching, run for fun, picnic, yoga practice, tree plantation drive, cleanliness drive and various adventure filled games & competitions were conducted.

The children were also taken on an educational-cum-sightseeing trip to Digboi Oil Museum, Powai Tea Estate, Lekhapani, Jairampur and Namsai Golden Pagoda during the six-day camp. Visit to police station, bank and Fire station was also conducted to increase the students’ awareness.

The camp intended to provide an opportunity to the children of the remote area to explore their environment, increase their exposure to the world outside and aid their social and individual skills.

The camp also intended to develop innovative thinking, hone natural skills and develop an interest in hobbies and sports. The parents of the students were grateful for the opportunity provided to their wards by the Assam Rifles, which was quite unthinkable for many. They wished that the event should continue to be conducted every year.

While attending the closing ceremony of the summer camp, 2023, Deputy Commissioner Hento Kargo and SP Kardak Riba appreciated the Khonsa Bn of Assam Rifles on behalf of all the people of Tirap, for its continuous efforts for the uplift of youth and children. The six-day summer camp reached its culmination after closing remarks by Col Aman Ahluwalia, Commandant, 6 Assam Rifles.
