ITANAGAR, June 1 – Arunachal Pradesh Literary Society (APLS) celebrated the 83rd birth anniversary of the renowned literary figure, ‘Sahitya Surjya’ late Lummer Dai, with a special event held at the State Golden Jubilee Banquet Hall. On this occasion, Jumsi Siram, the first Hindi writer from Arunachal Pradesh, was bestowed with the prestigious ‘Luminous Lummer Dai Literary Award, 2023’. The event was graced by the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, who presented the award.
The Lummer Dai Literary Award, which includes a memento, a citation, a collection of books, and a cash prize of Rs 10,000, was presented to Jumsi Siram in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Hindi literature in the state. Floral tributes were paid to the late Lummer Dai by Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, APLS President and Padma Shri awardee Y D Thongchi, Assam Publication Board Secretary Pramod Kalita, Secretary Cultural Affairs Tai Kaye, noted writer and Padma Shri awardee Mamang Dai, Itanagar Smart City CEO Dahey Sangno, and other dignitaries present.
In his address, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein highlighted the close relationship he shared with the late novelist Lummer Dai, emphasizing that Dai’s work continues to inspire the younger generation. He praised Dai for his fluency in the Assamese language and his significant contributions to Assamese literature, which fostered a sense of brotherhood between the people of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. Mein also commended APLS for its efforts in promoting literature and fostering harmony among the people of both states.
Reflecting on the state government’s initiatives to promote culture, tradition, literature, and languages, Deputy CM Mein called upon academicians, scholars, and social thinkers to provide their valuable suggestions and support the government’s endeavors in preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Arunachal Pradesh. He also mentioned the government’s plan to introduce an award to recognize young achievers who bring laurels to the state, aiming to encourage more young individuals to explore their hidden talents.
APLS President Y D Thongchi expressed his heartfelt tribute to Lummer Dai and congratulated Jumsi Siram on receiving the prestigious award. Thongchi acknowledged the support and patronage of Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, which enabled APLS to expand its literary activities and establish new branches across districts and even in the national capital. He expressed optimism for further progress in the field of literature with the participation of young writers and continued support from the state government.
The event also witnessed the release of the latest edition of APLS’ literary magazine ‘Prayas’ and four books published by the Research Department. Additionally, a ‘rainbow’ recitation program was held, featuring more than 15 participants, including school children, who recited their self-composed poems.
The celebration of Lummer Dai’s birth anniversary and the conferring of the Luminous Lummer Dai Literary Award showcased the commitment of Arunachal Pradesh to preserve and promote its rich literary heritage, encouraging writers and fostering cultural harmony within the state.
