Geothermal Power Project to Thrive: Tawang and West Kameng Districts Chosen with Norwegian Support

ITANAGAR, Jul 06: The Tawang and West Kameng districts have been identified for the establishment of a Geothermal project in Arunachal Pradesh, proposal was submitted on 24 June 22 jointly by the Centre for Earth Science & Himalayan Studies (CES&HS) and department of Science & Technology and North Eastern Hill University, said CES&HS Director TT Tara.

The basic objective of the project is to carry out geological, geochemical and geothermal investigation of Arunachal Pradesh, which is being supported by the Norwegian Embassy through Norwegian Geotechnical Institute.  

While talking to this daily on Thursday Tara briefed that the centre is working on to develop a comprehensive Seismological Data Depository for North-East India (SDDNEI) in collaboration with National Centre for Seismology (NCS).  

The CES&HS have already identified 100 for installation of Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) across the state, which will be jointly carried out by the Indian Meteorological Department and (IMD) and CES&HS, informed Tara.

To carry out the same, engineers & scientists would be undergoing two month’s training on data interpretation and visualization, wherein they have already completed one month training organised by Regional Centre, Guwahati, he added.

Under the data sharing policy, the centre is also developing a Web Portal for Live forecasting for the state, informed Tara. Adding that through the portal people of the state can avail information about the weather across the state.
