OGW of NSCN(K) Arrested with 10.6 gm Suspected Heroin and Alleged Links to Underground Elements

In a operation, the Deomali Police Station, under the leadership of Inspector T. Wangpan and Sub-Inspector Umeshan C, successfully apprehended Azizul Rehman, a 34-year-old resident of Deomali, on 26th July 2023. The arrest was made during a checkpoint set up at the Joypur-Deomali route near Chatjo river bridge based on credible information received from a reliable source. Superintendent of Police Tirap closely supervised the operation.

During the checkpoint, the police conducted a thorough search of Azizul Rehman’s belongings and discovered one soap case containing 10.6 grams of suspected Heroin, along with alleged sale proceeds amounting to Rs. 1,23,000/-. Several other incriminating articles were also seized from his possession. The recovery was carried out in the presence of Mr. Dingzang Baham, Circle Officer of Deomali, and independent witnesses, adhering to all lawful procedures.

Upon interrogating the suspect on the spot, Azizul Rehman confessed to his previous involvement in an extortion case and revealed his purported connections with underground elements. He admitted to providing information to a hardcore underground cadre who is wanted in multiple extortion and other criminal cases. Authorities verified the presence of the contact number of this underground cadre saved in his mobile handset.

Considering the evidence and the suspect’s admission, a case has been registered against Azizul Rehman at the Deomali Police Station under U/S 21(b) of the NDPS Act R/W Sec. 13 of the UA(P) Act. The investigation into the matter is currently ongoing.

It was discovered that Azizul Rehman had a prior criminal record as an Over Ground Worker (OGW) of the NSCN(K) militant group. In 2012, he was arrested and chargesheeted in an extortion case (Dml PS Case No. 24/12 U/S 384 IPC). During that incident, authorities recovered extortion money of ₹31,300/- along with extortion notes affiliated with NSCN(K) from his possession.

The police are continuing their investigation to uncover further details and ascertain any additional links between the suspect and the underground elements.
