Sikiing Kojee Charitable Society Raises Drug and Child Protection Awareness in Yingkiong

In an effort to combat the growing issue of drugs and substance abuse and to promote child rights protection, the Sikiing Kojee Charitable Society organized a one-day awareness programme in collaboration with several local organizations. The event took place at the Royal Siang Academy School in Yingkiong, Arunachal Pradesh.

The programme, held on July 22, 2023, saw the participation of parents, faculty members, students, and staff who gathered to raise awareness and knowledge on the ill effects of drug abuse, legal implications, and child rights protections under the POCSO Act 2012.

Distinguished resource persons graced the occasion, providing valuable insights and information to the attendees. Dr. Karo Teng, MD (Psychiatry) and Senior Medical Officer of the De-Addiction Centre at District Hospital Yingkiong, delivered a powerful presentation on “Multiple Drug Use and Its Management.” He emphasized the severe consequences of drug addiction on individual health, social well-being, and the legal aspects surrounding drug abuse.

Advocate Shri Olen Komut, representing the District Legal Service Authority (DLSA) Yingkiong, shed light on the “Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act 2012 (POCSO Act).” His session focused on educating students about recognizing good touch and bad touch, while also explaining the legal framework in place to protect children’s rights.

Highlighting the role of law enforcement in addressing the rising drug-related cases in Upper Siang district, Officer In-Charge of Police Station Yingkiong, Shri Mongol Koyu, briefly spoke about the efforts of the police department to tackle the issue.

Various other dignitaries and representatives also expressed their thoughts during the event. Dr. Apang, Secretary of Royal Siang Academy, Shri P. Lama, Administrator, and Principal A. Choudhury shared their perspectives on the importance of such awareness programmes in schools.

Dr. Mity Jopir, Chairperson of Sikiing Kojee Charitable Trust, and Kalpana Perme, President of Arunachal Pradesh Women Welfare Society (APWWS) Yingkiong Unit, along with their respective teams, actively participated in the programme, further emphasizing the significance of community involvement in such initiatives.

The event was also attended by officers and staff from the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) and DLSA, as well as parents, faculties, staff, and students, making it a comprehensive effort to spread awareness and create a more informed and vigilant society.

Through this collaborative awareness programme, the Sikiing Kojee Charitable Society and its partners aim to make a positive impact on the community, fostering a safer environment for children and promoting a drug-free society in Yingkiong and beyond.
