Women Police team arrests rape accused after 2 years

ITANAGAR, Jun 29: A team from Itanagar Women Police Station (WPS) arrested an alleged accused in a rape case from Leh in the Union Territory of Ladakh following two years of dogged investigation, Capital SP Jimmy Chiram said on Wednesday.

The Police had registered the FIR case No. 70/20 U/S 376/417/34 IPC on September 17, 2020. As per the First Information Report received from the victim, it was alleged that one L R Meena raped her by giving false promise to marry her.

The SP said the investigation was delayed due to COVID-19 pandemic during the last two years. He added, except for the name, profession and phone number (fake identity issued) of the alleged accused, there was no information about his whereabouts.

“After detailed investigation IO of the case SI R Singpho finally ascertained the identity of the accused in February 2022 as Lekh Ram Meena of Rajasthan. He was on constant move in Rajasthan and Leh, Ladakh area as he was with paramilitary force.

Finally, the team from WPS comprising Inspector P Taku, SI Rosy Singpho and others traced the alleged accused and arrested him from Leh on June 27 after a week-long operation and the team returned to Itanagar today.

Complimenting the cops for their success, the SP said, “WPS Itanagar under Capital Police strives to solve each case of crime against women. OC WPS and team have shown excellent initiative in solving this cold case through sheer effort and persistence.”
