Capital police busted ATM breaker gang of Haryana, Rajasthan and Assam, 9 arrested for robbery

NAHARLAGUN, AUGUST 18 : One of the rare case of ATM Breaking and looting case of capital complex has been solved with capital police busted the gang from Haryana & Rajasthan in connection with SBI ATM Breaking and looting of Kankarnalla at wee hours of July 26  Nine person has been so far arrested. Briefing the media by the capital police chief Jimmy Chiram at Naharlagun police station expressed satisfaction of the police team of capital police insolvign the case with arrest fo nine person and recovering of some amount around 3 Lakhs and recovery of tools and kits and vehicle used in the operation. SP Chiram appreciated the team effort in solving the case and also denizens of capital complex for supporting and also cooperating of the investigation team so that the case which was a clueless and a rare case with no proof of any witness in first instance has been resolved. Said SP.

SP inform that the incident takes place on wee hours of July 26th and a written FIR was received from Biswajit Sharma 36 yrs s/o  Gobin Sharma vill- Borpukuri  PO- Balukmari  PS – Lanka  Dist- Hojai, Assam resident of A- Sector and local representative of  NRC Corporation India Pvt Ltd  Naharlagun which looks after all the ATMs in ICR and that some unknown culprit cut down  ATM ID no. DFNK003232042 of Kankarnallah NLG with gas cutter and stolen away cash Rs. 11,73, 000  from the ATM. On receipt of the FIR, a case vide NLG PS case no. 95/22 u/s 457/380 //401/120-B/201/34 IPC was registered and taken up for investigation. He said.

At first the case was entirely clueless with no possible leads, it was a great challenge to get the evidences and there were several aspect which we go through and it took lots of time,  seriousness of the issue and possible involvement of inter-state elements a special team was constituted led by SDPO Naharlagun Dy SP Dekio Gumja, OC PS Naharlagun Inspector Khiksi Yangfo, Inspector Jumli Kamdak, SI S.S Jha, Ct Kanto Samyor, Ct Sandeep Yadav, Ct Debojit Borah, Ct Lucky Tacho, Ct Anugrah Dwivedi, Ct Raj Tamang and Ct Punyo Tari which worked under and I have been constantly supervising and even monitoring the activities with team leader SDPO to solve the case.  Jimmy Chiram, said. 

After detailed investigation which included examination of hundreds of witnesses and examination of more than 300 hours of CCTV footage from cameras installed in various parts of Itanagar capital complex, electronic surveillance and collection of human intelligence, CCTV footages form the denizens the team found breakthrough when a car with partial visible number plate was found leaving the scene. The car was identified as one Hyundai i10 Nios car and the registration number was identified as AS-07-S-3611. The car was registered in the name of one Mustafizur Rahman who was arrested on August 6th from Geku in Upper Siang district where he was working as a labour contractor and working in a school building construction. After arrest of Mustafizur Rahman the team went on to arrest four more people namely Sohidul Ali, Johidul Islam, Sadik Ali and Nabir Islam from various places in Assam for their involvement in the said case on same day itself with the help of OC PS Laluk and IC OP Nowboicha. Further, the police team went on to arrest Rukumudin and Arshad Khan @ Kallu from Ganga village in the wee hours of August 6th. SP said. 

During the course of custodial interrogation police team came to know that Sadik Ali and Nabir Islam were contacted by one Rukumudin and Arshad Khan who are residents of Bharatpur, Rajasthan with a request that they want to commit ATM thefts in ICR and want their help in doing so. After getting assurance from the two of them Arshad Khan @ Kallu brought five persons from Mewat, Haryana namely Md Zaheed @ Haji Bhai, Rahul Khan, Salman, Mohammad Khalid and Md Hasim. Arshad Khan @ Kallu introduced the five of them to Sadik and Nabir and told them that these are habitual ATM thieves having committed hundreds of ATM thefts between them all across the country. Between 20/07/22 to 25/07/22 after canvassing all the ATMs in the capital they selected the ATM at Kankarnallah for committing theft. On July 26th the gang from Mewat, Haryana with the help of the gang from Assam committed the ATM theft after burning the ATM at Kankarnallah. After committing theft cash was distributed where the team from Assam was given 3, 50,000 and rest of the cash was  taken by the Mewat Gang.  The gas cutter, cylinders etc were disposed off in the river at Nirjuli Village-I by the miscreants after commission of the offence.  Said SP Chiram.

It was also learned during the course of custodial interrogation that the gang had planned another ATM theft at polo Colony to be done on 15/08/22 or 16/08/22 and the gang from Mewat will come on 14/08/22 for doing the same. Accordingly, on 14th of August a trap was laid down and Naharlagun Police team after a brief shootout managed to arrest the two members of the Mewat Gang namely Md Zaheed @ Haji bhai and Rahul khan along with oxygen cylinder, gas cylinder, cutters etc who had come to commit ATM theft at Polo Colony Naharlagun. With regards to this case vide NLG PS Case No-102/22 u/s 457/380/120-B/401 IPC has been registered and they have been arrested in the said case as well as NLG PS Case No-95/22 and another ATM planned robbery was averted. He said.

Naharlagun Police team has solved the case of ATM theft at Kankarnallah and prevented another ATM theft at Polo Colony with the arrest of five people namely Mustafizur Rahman, Sohidul Ali, Johidul Islam, Sadik Ali ,Nabir Islam belonging from Assam, two people namely Rukumudin and Arshad Khan from Rajasthan and two people namely Md Zaheed @ Haji Bhai and Rahul Khan from Haryana. Further, the police team has seized equipments such as oxygen cylinder, gas cutter, LPG cylinder which were to be used for committing ATM theft at Polo Colony , recovered equipments namely LPG Cylinder and gas cutter that were used for committing ATM theft at Kankarnallah, Naharlagun and was discarded in the river. Further, the team also recovered cash in the tunes of Rs 3,50,000. In the coming days more arrests and recovery will follow. He said.

Capital police while congratulating Naharlagun Police team for their efforts and  convey its gratitude to the DGP APP, IG (L&O), IG Crime for their valuable support and guidance in solving the case. 

We would also like to inform that this case has been solved with help of many denizens of ICR and adjoining areas and we are grateful for their support as well. It is only together that we can grow and become better. He said.

We have pressed a women PCR team in capital police and presently the PCR has been stationed near PCCF office at 0 Point Tinali in Itanagar and will cover the crimes related to women’s. in time to come we will strengthened our strength and on basis of need we may be able to send the police in time subject to proper information about crime and address and to solve any crime the support and cooperation of general public is required.  He said.

4 accused were resident in various parts of state and others and if any other remain will be arrested. Most of them come to state capital legally to work as JCB driver and Tipper driver and other places and we need to remain aware of these elements. He said.

The first arrest was on August 6 and within ten days almost all were arrested and every police man of the team has worked tirelessly. This was a stray incident and it was after four years. However all have been arrested and we will complete the investigation. SP said.

There was no technological failure, the accused have internal technical knowledge and they have disabled the technical equipment and alarm system and due to which the alarm in police station was not made. We regularly get information from the banks but the accused were technically sound and they disabled the ATM and looted the booty. He said.      

This plan was made in July and the plan was executed with a very short time of 11 minute and this seems to be rare case but in future we shall look forward that the capital police equip. with more strength, equipment and knowledge and training to deal with such type of incidents. SP added.
